Is glucosamine safe for horses with metabolic conditions like EMS or Cushing’s?

However, in studies meant to induce insulin resistance in laboratory animals, the levels given were 100 times the normal dosage, which are levels that supplemental dosing in horses does not nearly approach. Furthermore, oral administration of large doses of glucosamine in animals has no documented effects on glucose metabolism.

From a practical standpoint, the risks of keeping an equine Cushing's disease patient or insulin-resistant horse on daily glucosamine are not well established, as we must remember that people and horses do not necessarily break down supplements in the exact same manner. 

A reasonable approach, supported by equine nutrition experts, is the following: if your insulin-resistant horse has been taking glucosamine without any problem, continue using it. But if your horse is actively battling laminitis or Cushing's disease, consider discussing with your veterinarian whether a joint supplement formulated without glucosamine (or with reduced glucosamine) is more appropriate. 

The bottom line is that the concern is not zero, but it is also not well-supported by equine-specific evidence at normal supplemental doses. Always consult your veterinarian before starting or continuing glucosamine supplementation in a horse with a diagnosed metabolic condition, and monitor for any changes in insulin-related symptoms.

Can glucosamine be used alongside other medications or supplements?

In most cases, yes — glucosamine is well-tolerated alongside other commonly used equine medications and supplements, and in many situations, combining it with complementary ingredients actually improves outcomes, like when it’s combined with chondroitin. 

Glucosamine is also frequently used alongside NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like phenylbutazone or flunixin) without known adverse interactions. In fact, using a joint supplement concurrently with NSAIDs can be a smart strategy: the NSAIDs manage acute pain and inflammation in the short term, while the glucosamine and chondroitin work at the structural level over the longer term,  addressing the root cause rather than just the symptoms.

  • Reduced joint heat and swelling. Run your hands along your horse's joints before and after work on a consistent basis. Decreasing heat or swelling over time is a meaningful indicator that inflammation is being better managed.

  • Greater willingness to work. Horses in less pain are more forward, more cooperative, and generally easier to ride. Behavioral changes, such as less resistance at the mounting block, improved responsiveness to leg aids, or increased engagement in lateral work, can be early and meaningful signs of improvement.

  • Improved range of motion. This is particularly noticeable in horses that were previously reluctant to collect, flex at the poll, or perform lateral movements. Flexion tests conducted by your veterinarian can provide a more objective measure.
